this is Ruth Nachman [now also Dulin]. i graduated
from Gale in 1968 and started there in kindergarten. this is my
first time at this website and I haven't seen it all by any means,
but the comments alone have taken a heck of a long time to read.
like Kathy Garness, i also would like to find Beatrix
Nyitrai, who graduated with me in '68. and i'd be happy to hear
from anyone.
Comments - This
has certainly been a wonderful trip down memory lane. I'm Moira
Silver and grew up on Birchwood, across the street from Ruthie
Nachman who just forwarded me the information on this site. I
also attended Gale from Kindergarten through 8th grade. I graduated
in 1968. My brother, Jack Silver, graduated from Gale in
1962. He lives in Tucson, AZ now after spending 25 years in Carmel,
CA.
My fondest memories are Howard Beach, recess at Gale, shivering and
saying BRRRRRR as we walked to school in the winter down Greenview and
Howard. I thought the distance must have been miles, but my husband and I
clocked it many years ago and it was only 1/3 of a mile. I live in Tucson,
Arizona. I've been here for 36 years and I still don't think I have "thawed"
out. I love my memories of Kiwanis (ping pong inside, ice skating outside,
the monkey bars, softball, volleyball), Oberman's delicatessan, and
walking the back alley's at 5 years old to Roth's Drug Store to buy
my mother cigarettes. Roth's was on the corner of Howard and Sheridan. As an
adult, I once asked my mother how she could have let me walk through back
alleys as young as 5 years old by myself. Her answer "we didn't even think
about it then, it was safe".
Lighted school house on Friday nights, roller skating in the halls,
Mrs. Meyers the librarian, thanks for the spittin Sarah memories,
summer nights playing outside in the street on Birchwood. Playing softball
with all the boys in empty lots. Mr Weiss and running relays...the
Rings in gym...the poles (I never made it to the top), those navy blue
shorts and white shirts, Miss Shultz in 1st & 2nd grade (I still
remember the German she taught us), the air raid drills in the halls when I
was in Kindergarten and 1st grade. It was an amazing time, and I never
realized how special it was. Does anyone remember the giant dandelions
growing in the empty lot near the corner of Howard and Greenview? I'm sure
there is so much more. This was just fun to read. So thank you to the guys
that started this site! My brother, Jack Silver, graduated from
Gale in 1962. He lives in Tucson now, after spending 25 years in Carmel, CA
Comments - Great
website! Thank you Ruth (Nachman Dulin) for letting me
know about it. Brought back tons of memories - Hy's, learning about
JFK's assassination, all the teachers, especially Irene Meyer
who was the librarian when I was there and was a huge influence in
my life, patrol boys, hall marshalls, assemblies. Lighted
Schoolhouse, all the friends. I have a sister (Robin - class of
64) and brother (Bill would have been class of 72 if we
hadn't moved to the suburbs) and we lived on Eastlake until 1968.
Still remember Harriet the crossing guard, and up until a
few years ago, my parents heard occassionally from Herbie
Williams who ran a newstand at Sheridan and Jonquil (?). This
is a real blast from the past. Thanks for putting the site
together.
Comments - Where
is the class of '68? I graduated that year and would love to have a
reunion. I've returned to the Chicago area, and I'm currently
the Environmental Division Director and Supervisory Engineer at the
Great Lakes Naval Station. I'd love to get in touch with some old
friends and catch up!
I'm also looking for Joseph Perez, who was in the class of
'69. Any news?
Comments - hi,
again, other kids of '68 and also the rest of you-
this is so cool. i think we should write in the years
we went to gale, our emails and who we're looking for, as per
Marcia's example. maybe we'll even have a reunion somewhere...at
the very least, we'll unearth some hidden treasure. that's already
been happening for me.
Comments - hi, guys-
Facebook is also a good venue for talking to each other about
non-gale stuff. we can be friends!!!!
i'd love to come to Chicago for a reunion but am both crippled and
somewhat financially strained. we could gather in Ketchikan, Alaska, where i
am [beautiful, and everyone is supposed to come here at least once] or the
la area [where my daughter and a number of people from our class live]. but
i do understand that i'm probably not the only financially strained one of
us, and perhaps not the only cripple.
Comments - THANK YOU
RUTH NACHMAN DULIN FOR FINDING ME AND HOOKING ME TO THIS
WEBSITE...I WOULD HAVE GRADUATED IN 1968, BUT MOVED IN THE 4TH GRADE
(I THINK). STILL IN CHICAGOLAND AREA AND LOVE THE IDEA OF A REUNION!
MY FONDEST MEMORIES ARE FROM MY LIFE IN ROGERS PARK!
Comments - I have a
little suggestion for those searching for old pals.
There is a website called Zabasearch.com.
Just type in a name and a state of residence if
known. I bet 6 out of ten times you can find the person you are
looking for or possibly a sibling. Its actually
frightening how much information is available.

from those fun days... would love to hear from anyone from my class

Comments - I just
stumbled onto this website and...WOW! If anyone at Gale (1961-1970)
remembers MARTIN WISE, please leave your name and e-mail address.
Thanks! For "Misc Publications" --- "The Hippie" was the
publication for Mrs. Mae Bach's 6th grade class in 1968. The name
of the paper was nominated by the students, among other names, put
on the black-board by Mrs. Bach, and the kids voted. The one with
the most votes won---- it was "The Hippie."
Hi Miles!
Was that your mother, Mrs. Beitler, who used to work in the office in the
1960's? I LOVED her! She was very cool! How is she? Is she still with us?
I sure hope so! (Class of 1971)
webmasters note: "Yes, Mrs. Beitler
is still going strong. And my late aunt also taught at Gale during the
1930s. Please consider leaving your contact information in the Guest Book
as it facilitates responses from people who may remember Martin Wise.

Comments -Just visited
the site. Read Moira Silvers mention of Obermans. I
was trying to remember that name though I distinctly remember the
onion rolls, chocolate cupcakes, snow balls, salamis and sweet
rolls. If she remembers Roth's Drug Store then Mrs Bayer's
food store and Harry Bayer's gas station can't be far
from her memory. "Butler" was an eccentric soda jerk at
Roth's. What ever happened to him? Also Allan Solomon
worked at and lived near that drug store. Where is he? I frequented
Howard Beach and Touhy Beach. There is a book "Sams Boys" all
about the lifeguard and junior lifeguard program at Touhy Beach
(Now Leone Beach) It is worth reading. The progrm still
continues to this day. Thanks to Bob Greendale's Gale News I
found out that at 10:45 AM June 13, 1956 I was getting a small "G"
at an awards ceremony. I don't remember that but still have the G.
Thanks for a great site.

Comments - This
website is so cool. I was only at Gale for five years (would have
graduated in 1981) but this is still very reminiscent, although I
was embarassed to find myself in the Gale Chorus picture, as well as
in one of the Gale Echo's. Does anyone remember those t-shirts we
got with the firehat. Anyway, my teachers were:
Casino (kindergarten) Davis
Maze Wilson
I also remember Miss Levant. She was the best teacher I EVER
had. She made school and chorus fun.

As a graduate of Gale in 1967, I am amazed at the website. There are
pictures of friends from days gone by that I have not thought of in

look forward to the next one.

Cool webpage! Found it through Facebook...
I grew up at Gale, from '79-87 K-8, except for one year
when I was at Eugene Field (coming back after that one year was really like
coming home). My teachers were:
K (79-80) - Ms. Casino
1 (80-81) - Ms. Raynard
3 (81-82) - Ms. Heck (skipped 2nd)
5 (83-84) - Ms Jelke (4th at Field)
6 (84-85) - ????? Don't remember but she was mean!
7 (85-86) - Mr. Ichista (sp?)
8 (86-87) - Mr. Collins among others (we actually had split class
periods those last 2 years)
I miss a lot of great friends: Ruben Aya, Ronald Nilson,
Daniel Wengert, Garfield Simms, Bret Krukenberg, among fellow "horsemen"
of the day (4 fingers up on all our grad photos, I still have them!!) And
the girls I had crushes on, especially Monica Ramirez, who was in 7th
grade in 86-87...
We moved out of the neighborhood to another part of Rogers
Park in 91, and I left Chicago in 94 to join the US Army...haven't been home
since for any length of time. Good memories on this page.

What a great website! I went to Gale School from 1957 to
1961(kindergarten to 4th grade). We lived at 1640 Juneway Terrace.
My name then was Barbara Hoffman. I had two younger sisters,
Sheila and Jill. My sister Sheila saw two of her class
pictures. I did not see any of mine though. A lot of names of
students sound familiar to me though it has been a really long time.
I remember you Jamie, we were neighbors. For some reason I
have been thinking about Rogers Park a lot lately. Keep up the good
work.

Comments -Oh
my goodness ! This is the first time I've scanned through the guest
notes. There are more of us out there still with Gale curiosity
than I imagined. Although
Howard Herbin
is the first fellow '56 I have noticed.
For
Al Rozanski...I
thought the "ledge" field was already a parking lot with the added
utility building by your time. While not THE best I certainly
ranked high in Ledge history, especially in singles play. I had the
knack of the short single and the apartment screened porch homers.
Ledge tournament would be welcomed! Unfortunately, we'd never be
able to collect on the prizes.
Howard Lanoff...are
you brother to Linda and another sister?
To J.
Vargas
'67...I too was warned about the neighborhood. On a drive through
the streets and especially the allies (I lived on Jonquil) in 1993,
in my gold Pontiac Convertible, the "stares" I got from the "folks"
were quite impactive. Upon arriving at my friends home (I had
driven from Philly) in Wheaten, he informed me that the area had
become equal to or worse than Cabrini Green near Wrigley. That's
why I was so fantastically pleased to see what Gale has become.
My only wish is that my parents and grandparents had NOT sold
their apartment buildings!!!
I spoke with a former CTA guy who now works for Harrah's outside
of Philly. Word is that a MARINA is coming next to Juneway beach
across from the cemetery.
The most fun I've had on the site is viewing the sat. pictures
of the neighborhood. Awesome "walking" the streets again. But I
miss the huge Standard Oil sign on the Sheridan curve flashing all
night, reflecting on my bedroom wall, 2 blocks away.
Marty Jacobs '56
P.S. Miles...Would it be possible to create a complete alphabetical
list of us? Name, Class year Feb/June and for those who allow it
and e-mail address? I don't know how you and your associate
creators ever had time to create this site but it has been a
fantastic job and more fun than most anything I've used this new
fangled technology for in years ! !
Webmaster's Note - Marty,
Thanks for your nice comments about the site. With regard to
publishing a summary of names and e mail addresses, we prefer to let those
that wish, post (and update) their contact information in the Guest Book.
We want there to be no confusion over the fact that we will never divulge
personal information about our visitors. While this may be a
little more cumbersome than desired, it has worked well in the past and for
now we would like to maintain that system. It should also be noted
that many of our visitors are also found on (and can be contacted through)
sites like Classmates.com and
Facebook. Thanks again for your
encouraging comments.

After watching the Food Channel last nite....ice cream dots were
invented by a fellow SIU grad...and there are a bunch of "known" SIU
people from Buckminster Fuller to "Sipowitz"...I got to wondering if
any of us reached "known" status. That could be either within a
specific area; politics, chemistry, etc. or on a National basis.
Fortunately or unfortunately I am slightly in that catagory and am
curious as to who else might be knowingly not known or recognized.
I was one of the original QVC hosts...created its original "Morning
Show" with Paul and Pat and also created the Silver "Bonanza" sales
concept and a bunch of their other stuff. Later got "downsized"
out. So I'll probably sell all my "in-house" stuff on E-Bay to
those are historically hooked. So much for the lack of fame and
lack of fortune.

Kudos to
GaleSchool.com webmasters. Amazing the amount of photos and even video
footage made available here. Thanks to Aretha Beaird for alerting me
to the site, the webmasters for the return glimpse into our precious pasts,
and Elizabeth Rowley for the Facebook arm of the GaleSchool.com website. My
eyes are completely crossed from reading the comments. Felicia, I see you
looking for me. I'm here. How is Kathy? You here from her? Heard she was
ill a few years back.
My Gale days were some pretty amazing times. They were the best and the
worst of times. Actually being in the care of the teachers and with friends
made those some great years. Gale was armed with teachers who were caring,
disciplined, and highly skilled. They were so very important to us...more
important than we might have known. I did not go to college, went to four
different high schools, did not graduate from a single one and had to go
back to get my GED. What I learned at Gale Elementary set (in my opinion) a
solid academic foundation on which to build. That's saying a lot of a
primary school education. Our teachers did their jobs and they did them
well...each and every last one of them. As an adult, I used to see Mrs.
Mostek in the neighborhood over the years. She was such a tall and
distinctive figure. Each and every time I saw her, I showed her love and
praise for how she took care of and taught us. Running toward with
excitement like a child.
Anyone remember the Gale after school program...ping pong tables, roller
skating on the first floor, arts & crafts. Why the hell did they stop doing
that? I was crushed. That was a bad move. Sent too many single parent
kids in the streets after school.
Felicia, I sent you and Liz a friend request on Facebook. I reside in
Seattle, WA. However, I am in Chicago for the summer till 10/2009. We
should definitely (those of us in the Chgo area) plan a mini reunion to at
least see each other again. Tomorrow is not promised to us. Some of our
friends and classmates have been laid to rest.
Webmasters, I am new to being a webmaster as I just built my business
website (www.planrightevents.com)
and am the webmaster for my family website (www.coakleyfamily.net).
I will offer whatever help I can in support of GALE SCHOOL. Just remember,
I am a novice hell bent on learning, learning, learning. You have done an
OUTSTANDING JOB here!!! And we owe you a debt of gratitude. It takes an
incredible amount of work in design and content to put a website together.
You are to be commended. Thank you, again.
Comments -I came upon this site today, and I'm taken back to so
many memories. I was in Frieda Grawe's class of February,
1954. My Gale Echo is signed by Judy Kahn, Bob Goldman, Ilene
Scott, Signe (Bunny) Belland, Judy Grant, Linda Fisher, Linda Lock,
Pat Tungate, Judy Grant, Phyllis Ostfeld and many others.
I last visited Chicago in 2006. What a change in Howard St! I'm
living in Oceanside, CA now, and would love to hear from any of my
classmates.
Comments -I left Gale in 1978 or 79. I remember lots
of stuff like playing with Star Wars action figures in the
front...getting kicked in the shin at the end of the year by a girl
(Amber was her name I think) who liked me and was upset that I
didn't say I liked her back, running, jumping, my best friend
Jeffrey Childers and much more. Cheers to the memories.

Hello from Bob Greendale, class of 1956. would have
never thought to look for gale school website except someone left a
message at my office yesterday asking if I was the Bob Greendale of
Gale School and if so, I needed to get my monopoly game in order, I
had no idea what that meant but it peaked my curiosity so here I am.
haven't had time to explore the entire web site but what I found was
fascinating. one entry mentioned my name in reference to a newspaper
that I used to publish, the jonquil gossip sheet and then I
discovered that the only one from my class who contributed an entry
was Marty Jacobs with whom I used to play monopoly before he
moved to Highland Park. perhaps that's who called. anyway i am very
impressed by the whole website and plan to go back and explore more.
Comments - It's good to see photos of the recent
reunion of the class of '67'66'65. I've one question, Mike Pols was
a football coach at Sullivan H.S. back in the late 60's and early
70's. What is his connection to Gale School ? Is he an alumnus?
Anyway, it's a "trip" to see the Kramer Bros.,The Shaye bros. Tom
Gummow, Jamie, Gary Freidman and others.

also at Gale at this time. from there we moved to Thailand , then
Sri Lanka, and then back to Israel. I actually came back to Chicago
and graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago. I am a painter and
you can see my tiny website at pninafrank.com. the artist in my
class was actually Beverly Baker. I wonder if anyone knows what
happened to her and what she is doing now. To my amazement I
remember a lot of the names in the photograph (1962) and think it
would be a great idea to somehow have the name of the people appear
when the arrow is on them.. I am not sure how that is done.. . All
the best. Fond memories. Pnina

my group has failed to find the site. I also visited the Sullivan
Alum site and only found 1 of the '56 group listed there. Also
would remind all to put their class year in their comments. I
re-read the comments of that teacher from the early 90s regarding
how horrible Gale was. As I noted in earlier comments I drove
through the area back then, in a gold convertible, without knowing
it had become worse than Cabrini Green. (I'm sending in a couple of
pictures i took during my "drive thru". It certainly hadn't taken
on the "that" look.) I hope she has revisited the site. (Since she
didn't sign in we can't find her to show her the "phoenix".) It may
have been 15 years of hell but the rebirth is so wonderfully
amazing.
I'M WONDERING,
IF ALL OF US WHO HAVE FOUND THIS SITE COULD PITCH IN A COUPLE
OF BUCKS, IF WE COULD PUT A NOTICEABLE AD IN THE TRIB URGING
EVERYONE WHO ATTENDED OR WHOSE SPOUSE ATTENDED GALE TO VISIT THE
SITE, PERHAPS WE COULD EXTEND THE CONTACTS. Anyone still living in

Comments -I
found the website after Gary Auslander, Sullivan '60 and Kilmer
steered me to it. What a bunch of memories came back to me with the
class of 1956. Marty, I still remember taking the C&NW out to HP
when you moved there. Al Bomchill was the best man at my wedding.
I read the Echo for my class and loved every page. I lived near
Kiwanis Park on Bosworth and had such great memories of playing
football and softball there. Anyone remember "Mac" in the
fieldhouse there? And being on the Gale softball team with Mr.
Weiss as coach was a blast. Can anyone forget going down to Juneway
Beach on a hot summer night after it closed??? ;-) Going to Hys to
get a pop or the Howard Theater to watch the Sci/Fi flicks on
Saturday afternoon and shoot paper clips at folks in rows in front
of my friends and I. Fries at Pan Dees (?). Playing fast pitch in
the parking lot across from the school and breaking a window on
Jonquil--still feel my Dad letting me have it over that. Getting
chips and candy at North Limits Grocery on Howard, Rogers, and
Greenview. So many memories just keep coming back. Anyone remember
pizza at Papa Milanos?
I transferred to Gale from Kilmer in 7th and was in Ms. Pietch's
room. I was nervous the first day I came in and everyone just
welcomed me. I have never forgotten that.
The website brought back so many happy and fun memories. I hope
more of class sees the site and regains there own wonderful
memories. If anyone is out there, gimme a holler.
Comments -I was made aware of this site by my Sullivan
HS contact, Gary Auslander. My name was Myra Polonsky,
Gale class of 1956. I work part time at the North Shore Center for
the Performing Arts in Skokie and see many of my old classmates
there attending performances. Among them are Linda Lanoff,
Margie Carmel, Sheila Beitler, Bob Greendale, Mickey Pols, Marshall
Baum and John Graf, our teacher. Sherrie Zukowski(still
my best friend since 4th grade) is one of the house managers at the
theater.
The class of 56 had a fantastic reunion in 2006 - Can you believe it
was 50 years since we graduated? Boy, has the old neighborhood
changed.
Love to here from any of my classmates. I still live here in
Skokie. Lil (from Hy's store across the street from Gale)
recently passed away. Hy died several years ago.

Comments -Rich, although the class of '56 was 13 years
earlier than mine, it's amazing how little things had changed over
that time. Yes, I remember Papa Milano's. It was my very first taste
of pizza. Papa's left Rogers Park in the mid '60s. They were located
on Oak Street downtown up until a few years ago, operated by Papa's
daughter. I last ate at Papa Milano's in March of 2005 and the
memories of that evening are the most wonderful in my entire life.
The grocery at the corner of R/G/H is now an antique store, which I
visit once a year. BTW, you didn't mention playing "ledge" but I'm
sure it was part of your recess and lunchtime activities too.
Comments - Al,I could never forget playing
ledge. The eternal argument between what was better: a "pinky" or a
tennis ball??? :-) Did you ever play "Kick the Can" in one of the
alleys? It was usually some of the girls like Gloria Johnson that
could run the fastest! The more I think about those years, the more
memories come back. And I am so glad to have them.
Comments - Great
Web Site - great fun. Great memories. Please send regards to
Ms. Pietch
from(class of '56) Thanks.

... yup, kick the can, ping pong in the Kiwanis park building, and
Chinese jump rope, in which the ropes were made out of rubber bands
found on the ground outside the Lerner newspaper building on
Ashland. And there should be no question ... the tennis balls flew
further, but the Pinky's are classic - which, by the way, you can
now purchase (again) at the World Market stores. They don't feel the
same but it's the "Pinky" brand.
I thought Mr. John Graf was a principal.?
If not he should have been. :-)
knowing he was an ex boxer got my immediate respect.
the building that was a grocery store and is now an antique store
used to be sandpipers health food and gift store. i worked there in
the late 70's til Mr and Mrs Simmons retired and sherwyn bought it.
Charlotte Simmons now owns the antique store.

Comments -Hello,
My name is Lori Hyman-Holguin, and I attended Gale up to the
5th grade. My brother Mark Hyman graduated with the class of
67. I would have graduated with the class of 71, but was
unfortunate because I moved to California. I recently have been in
contact with my childhood friends Kathy Hayes, and Francis
Rutstein. I would like to be informed of any reunions for
either year in the future and would love to attend one of these
functions, and I could notify my brother Mark of any upcoming
reunions for his year of 71.
Sincerely,
Lori Hyman-Holguin

Iheard about the site yesterday from Earl Choldin, a fellow
Canadian. After I retired from Johns Hopkins University in 2007, my
wife, Peggy, and I emigrated to Canada. We live in Windsor, Ontario
and we love it here. We did not want to live in the US any longer,
but we did want to be close to Chicago. My mother, two brothers, Rob
and Don, and our older son, Eli live in the Chicago area. A few
years ago, Eli married Hannah, a woman who grew up in Rogers Park.
Eli and Hannah had a daughter a little over a year ago. We visit our
granddaughter Miriam about once a month and usually get to babysit.
I would love to hear from my classmates. My email address is:

Excellent Site Thank You
Snowy cold days like this were for ice skating. I skated mostly at
Touhy Beach ( now Leone Beach). It was bigger and the ice was
excellent.
Sam Leone had a Junior Lifeguard training program at Touhy. I
attended from five years old until fifteen. Almost lived there in
the summer. For those interested there is a great book “Sam’s Boys”
by Chris Serb published in 2001 about this program. It was still
going on in 2007 and hailed as the oldest program of its kind. Also
there is a radio program called Leone Beach on
WBEZ.ORG from
8/24/2001 on the subject.

Comments -Hi
friends---Not a Gale graduate but am looking for Mark Howard,
Gale, '70. If anyone is in touch w/ him, please pass along that I'd
love to say hello to him. Mark (and his sister Holly) and I went to
high school together. If you're uncomfortable w/ a
stranger asking his whereabouts, feel free to actually see who I am
in a little video on my website (and direct Mark there, too!).
Comments -I
would have graduated in 1977 but only went there from 1st to fourth
grade (1969 to 1973?). It was so much fun to look at the pictures
especially the class of 1977 with quite a few names I recognized,
Ketty Echeverria, Heidi Just, Hripsema Bouroudjian, Lili Sacks, Mike
Beckerman, George Howard! I also remember Terri Herr was
in my class but she ended up moving away...her dad had the coolest
baby blue convertible mercedes! Funny how I can remember stuff from
when I was a kid but hardly remember my last meal.
I also kind of remember my teachers:
1st Grade: Mrs. Johnson
2nd Grade: ? Maybe Mrs. Cox?
3rd Grade: Mrs. Lavant - she was so nice and had the most
sweetest of smiles! I remember they came into our class to film us
for something or other...wonder were that film is?
4th Grade: Mr. Collins - I remember he use to make us march
around the room while he played his ukele and we sang "oh when the
saints come marching in"! It was hilarious!
So much fun to take a walk down memory lane.

Comments - 1977-1981
Hello! My name is Sonia Castillo (Rojas), I reside in Dallas
Texas now, I went to Gale School from 1977 to 1981, my Teachers
were, well the ones I remember, Ms. Amanda Amaro (4th Grade), Ms.
Liliana Rincon (5th Grade) and Jose Rolando Guzman (6th Grade).
I didn't get to graduate because My Grandma decided that it was time
for us to go back to Mexico. I sure remember some of my friends,
specially my dearest best friend, I lost contact with her in 1989,
her name is Mercedes Cortes, she graduate in 1983 from Gale
School, if someone read this and know her, please let her know that
I'm looking for her, on September 3, 2010 I will be flying to
Chicago and my plans are to go and take a look at what it us to be
my hood. I will be visiting Howard Street, I will be transporting my
self in the train (That's if I still remember how) I will go to
Downtown and of course I will be swimming in the Lake, my Grandma
and I used to go to the Rogers Park to swim, my Grandma pass away in
December 20 of 2002. I also remember Carmen and I think her last

Gale School will always be in my Heart until the day that I die, I

Comments - Who wrote about
our reunion? I was on the committee and it was a huge success. So
many people came from all over. Do you remember the bus stopping at
the Affy Tapple on Clark and getting Taffy Apples?
Comments - I remember
the taffy apples on Clark, we would walk up there and knock on the
door and someone would come out with however many you wanted. I
never knew if they were suppose to sell them out the door or not but
they were good.!
I guess they either moved or went out of business.?

Comments - Are you the Jim Copeland
that worked at Eagle Sheet Metal Manufacturing in Niles Illinois in
the late sixties?
Comments - I suppose someone
should leave a record of the event--it started when my old classmate
Bob Cole called to inform me he would be visiting Chicago around
Thanksgiving and why don't I have dinner with he and his family?
Sure I said and invited another old fart from the '72 grad. class
and he invited another and so on until 16 people showed up for Tapas
in Evanston. Basically a mini-reunion! What a gas! Some of us hadn't
seen each other in 35+ years. While some attendees brought their
extra belly and shiny foreheads, (that would be me) others were as
lovely and fresh as graduation day in 1972--I won't mention names
(Gail Yamashiroya-Paskind, Joyce Meyer) but it was wonderful to see
everyone looking so good.
Since this was relatively easy to do we're going to do it
again--possibly once every year or two, just to keep it fresh. I
thought maybe other classes could do it too!! Everyone knows at
least one other classmate--follow the thread. Or join us for the
next one in November!! The giant all-class all-Gale reunion! We've
just worked the last 40 years--time to have some fun!!
Comments - Hi Nancy Holab! This
is Bob Cole. Your bother Bill (Billy, as we knew him), was a best
friend of mine when were little at Gale. Alon with Charlie Shih, we
were the three muskateers of the lower grades! Until you moved out
of town. I recently got back in touch with Bill through another
"little" friend, Tom Stranich. Although Bill wasn't there, a bunch
of us had a mini Gale reunion last November up in Evanston. I
posted the pictures on the Gale website. Good to hear from you!

Comments - Dearest Former Gale Students,
My name is Constance Jelke and
I was a teacher at Gale from February 1957 until June of 1987. During those
years I taught everything from 3rd grade to 8th including a stint as the
science teacher for a number of years. Yes, I was the one who wore a lab
coat and had a rabbit, gerbils, hamsters, etc. We had guppies too, but one
year at Christmas time, the tank heater didn't work too well and I came back
to a fish tank with ice on the top. We had only goldfish after that
experience. I have many fond memories of Gale and the many extraordinary
children who attended our school. I was supposed to be the teacher, but I
learned so much of life from my students. I thank you for those golden
opportunities.
I live in Las Vegas now, mostly for the lack of snow. As I age I find it
more difficult to get around and I don't think a Chicago winter would be
helpful. I still keep in contact with Mr. Graf, Mr. Borre, and Ms. Mosteck.
I have travelled through much of the world and every time I come back to
the States I realize how much we have to be thankful for in our country.
It's not perfect, but it is great and I know that all of you have a hand in
making it that way.
Webmasters note - I had Ms. Jelke as a teacher
(I am sure she erased me from her memory long ago.) and I remember
her as a fine example of what made all the teachers back then great.
I would never work to achieve my potential, was always getting into
trouble, and generally was a pain in the ass. Despite this, she
(and many others great teachers) persevered and educated me despite
myself. My life has been great because of those things I
learned from her and others. I am sure I never had the vision to
say so at the time, but "THANK YOU, Ms. Jelke". You gave me the
tools to find my way through life and I appreciate it more than you will
ever know.
John (Jack) Davis - Webmaster

I have so many memories of you ,you lived in a townhouse near
Juneway Terr?

Comments - Dear Former Students,
I, Constance Jelke, seem to be
getting a bit forgetful in my old age. I totally forgot to give my E-mail
address and even gave the wrong dates for my years at Gale. I was a teacher
there from Feb. 1957 until June 1989. I am going on a long deferred cruise
of the Mediterranean in September, but when I get back home I would love to
hear from any former students.
P.S. No, I never had anyone put on a dunce cap (where does one get
such a thing?), although I might have thought about it a few times. I
confess to having been impatient when someone did not do his or her homework
but I also had tremendous pride in those children who tried their best,
sometimes under the most trying of circumstances.
Date: August 16, 2010
Comments - Hi Ms.Jelke,
It was so nice to hear from you!!! How is Mr.Graf?
Do you remember me?
Comments - Hi, It's Dave Bykoff. I
would have graduated from Gale with the class of 1970. I hope all is
going well with my former classmates.
I recently found a couple of class photos from 1962, 1964, 1966, and
1968 and forwarded them to the Gale Webmaster. Hopefully they will
be posted soon. I didn't see any of our class photos from this time
period, so if you are a 1970 Alumni, you may want to take a look.

you know that my painting of endangered yellow ladyslipper orchids
is now hanging at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural
History in Washington DC, as part of a juried international
exhibition of botanical art titled "Losing Paradise? Endangered
Plants Here and Around the World". The exhibit will be up until
December 2010, and will then open in June 2011 at the Royal Botanic
Gardens, Kew, London, England. It is co-sponsored by the Smithsonian
Institution and the international Center for Plant Conservation.

Hi, my name is
Hideo Kagabayashi. I was in the class of 1972, and now a
citizen in Japan. I'm sure that everybody knows about the big earthquake
that hit Japan on the 11th of March. Three months has passed but we
still have a number of 8,000 people missing and up till today the dead
counts up to 15,000. and because of the Tsunami that hit the nuclear power
plant, radiation leaks have been detected and has polluted nearby soils and
water. The danger to the nuclear plant has not yet ended, and the people who
had to evacuate are still living in packed up gymnasiums and halls,
temporary homes are being built, but it would take a couple of more month
for everyone to move in. Fortunately, I live in Tokyo which is about 140
mile away from the power plant, but after rainfalls low level of radiation
has been detected in our area. Also my apartment was partly damaged by the
earthquake. After the tragedy, rescue teams from all over the world came to
help us and also everyone in the world took action to raise funds to help
Japan, and as a citizen of Japan I would like to say Thank You for
everyone's kindness. We still need time to rebuild the damage, but I
strongly feel that in the near future, we will regain our strength.
My former class
mates, Tom Stranich, Aron Packer, Robert Cole and Joyce Meyer have
sent me heart warming messages in concern of the tragedy and I really was
encouraged by them. Thank you again for your concern and support.
Comments - I'm sorry to inform the Gale
community that another one of our former teachers has passed away.
Ronna Kramer died on June 11. She is fondly remembered by her former
students and co-workers. Condolences to her husband Al, their two
daughters and grandchildren.

Comments - OK, who ID'd Janice at my
party? It was a very unique party date situation. After working
carefully to pick the best closest date to my birthday and avoid
conflicts....Ruben had his on the same day. It was very difficult
making sure that I got the best girls!!
I guess that might be the south cemetary wall, although I seem to
remember it more see through. My guess would be late 50s based upon
the alleyway.
Anyone know the status of the yacht farm planned for across the
street?
By an amazing quirk....I actually had the opportunity (a short time
ago) to talk with the owner of the house at the corner of Juneway
and Sheridan where we used the curved driveway for bike races.
Does anyone remember the massive dragonfly summer? I've been trying
to research it but haven't done well. It was pre-56 but I can't
figure it out.
I must reaaaaallly be getting old. I get a real charge coming back
to this site. Every comment or pic triggers sights, sounds and even
smells (french fries from Hi's).
Do the kids from Gale in it's rebirth fully realize the 3 distinct
lives of "our" school?
Comments -Does anyone remember Barry Stiles.?
He had a little sister, can't remember her name.....
Date: August 31, 2011
Comments -Barry Stiles had a sister named
Joyce, their mom was Lorraine and they lived on Sheridan and
Howard. I seem to recall that Barry Stiles was killed by a rival
gang member while I attended Gale back in the 70's .

Comments - Hello All Gale Students. My
Name is Nancy Wallace (Teebo) Class of 65. I found your site
when viewing Classmates.com Sullivan HS. I started the Gale School
message board and has 102 messages so far. First let me start by
saying those were some of the best years of my life! Lighted School
House was the best! I have a brother Kenneth Wallace that was
best friends with Steve Venables ( sorry to hear about his
demise- I will tell my brother). I also had a sister Francine
Wallace who I believe was in Ms. Jelke's class and loved
her. My sister passed away almost 4 years ago (tooo young) after a
successful stem cell transplant from our brother. I tell my family
how our mom sent us out in the summer to play and don't come back
until lunch! AND we did ---- played in the alleys all day with
nothing but our bikes and maybe a jump rope (if you were lucky),
then eat and go back untill dinner! At our 30th Sullivan Class of 69
reunion there was about 10 of us that went to Gale. If any of you
are out there please feel free to email me and anyone who knew my
brother or sister, I would love to here from you.
I have lived in Green Bay Wi for almost 15 years and love it here. I never
wanted to be a PACKERS fan but they put PACKER juice in the drinking water
because the city owns the PACKERS so I had no choice. GO PACK GO!!!!
Comments - Cindy Kelly - Please check
the SSID Death Index (
http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi ), I put
the name of Patrick Tripoli and found that a Patrick
Tripoli passed away. I hope it is not the same Patrick who went
to Gale but this is a great site to verify if someone passed away.

Comments - House walk in Rogers Park
coming up this weekend. Find info on Rogers Park Historical Society
website.
I have many good memories of Gale. I attended from Kindergarten
through 8th.
Through other programs, I recently made contact with classmates
Dorothy Harrington, Billy Poulsen, Stan Doremus and Betty Hirst.
It has been fun sharing so many good memories
I also have kind thoughts of many teachers (Durlacher, Hatowski,
Palmer,Baumgartner, Araota, Hankie), Tucker) and many others.
Please forgive my spelling.
I think I was the second Editor in Chief of the Gale Echo--All my
class mates did the work and my biggest job was running off copies
on the mimeograph machine in the Office. Lots of really nice people
(students and teachers).
We lived at Juneway and Hermitage. Sadly, I found all that area was
demolished when I last visited. I delivered the Howard News for
several years and later went on to work at Ridge Howard Drugs during
high school. Also worked ONE night at Pete's' Hamburger Stand
thanks to my friend George Arata (??)--Unfortunately I didn't
cut the mustard and was never called back.
I had many a lunch at "Hi's". I remember standing in line at the
back of the store for hot dogs served by Mr Beskin; He and
his Brother were the finest as was Marvin.
Many thanks for building this great Web Site--it has meant a lot to
me.
My name is Constance Jelke and I was a teacher at Gale from
1957 to 1989 when I retired. Last year (2010) I had written and said
that I would be happy to hear from any of my old students. I was
pleasantly surprised when I received a number of Emails from
students who remembered me. A couple of days ago I received a
lovely Email from one of my former students, Robert Cole,
class of 1972. Unfortunately it was on my iPad, and along with
others, it was deleted by mistake. If anyone knows Robert's Email
address I would greatly appreciate receiving it.
Thank you for any help you can give me. Robert was a wonderful
student and I do so wish to write to him.

Comments - John Graf's wife of 66 years dies.
Obituary in Chicago Tribune. RIP. James Rubenstein Class of 1958.
I was in his class May 5, 1955 and he pointed out that we should
write 5/5/55 often since it would probably be our last opportunity.
I would think of him every time one of those times came up. Next is
11/11/11.
He was one of my best teachers at Gale. He was especially respectful
of boys who were rascals as opposed to the disdain held for them by
other teachers.

Comments - does anyone remember tony, andy or
robin dadik class of 1975.?
Comments - Anyone remember Mrs Bernstein who
taught at Gale?

Comments - Dear
Former students,
One of
you gave me the email address of Robert Cole, class of 1972.
Unfortunately the address was no longer valid, and the letter I wrote to
Robert came back to me as being undeliverable. For that reason I am going
to put the whole of it here in the hopes that he may read it or a friend may
tell him about it.
Dear
Bob,
I"m
sorry that I didn't write to you sooner, but my computer died a few
weeks ago. It was my 4th computer (assembled by Friendly Computers) and
so slow that I really did not like it. For that reason I was not
unhappy with its demise. After much study, I decided upon a HP Pavilion
running Core 7 with Windows 7. Unfortunately, I never used Windows 7
before nor the type of document software that came with it. With the aid
of several books, I am learning to use it.
Regrettably, I deleted your original email on my iPad (along with pleas
from various political organizations). The iPad is relatively new too,
and it is taking me time to master it.
At any
rate, I am delighted that you took the time to write to me. It's
wonderful to hear from former students and to find out what they have
done with their lives. Your life sounds like one of the very good ones.
I am also delighted that your children show the same interest in
science that you did as a child. That is something our country
desperately needs --- more interest in science, and less in celebrities
who are famous for simply being celebrities. Hmm, I wonder if I am
getting to be a grouch in my old age (I hit the big 80 in two weeks) or
if the America I knew as a young person has changed radically. But boys
like you, who have turned into great young men, have made me glad that I
became a teacher.
I live
in Las Vegas now, enjoying the warm weather and particularly the lack of
snow. I don't care for gambling, but there are many other things to do
and see here.
I hope
that you continue to enjoy your life, your family, and your friends.
Oh, and don't forget to travel and see how the rest of the world lives
Most
sincerely,
Constance Jelke, former teacher at Gale 1957 to 1989

Comments - Mrs.
Jelke
I work at a power plant now and previously worked for Borg Warner chemicals
and General Electric chemicals. I dont know how many times I have thought of
your science class while running lab tests at these jobs.
Happy birthday to you and glad to hear you are up on the latest computers
and gadgets.
You were one of my favorite teachers at Gale.

Comments - My name
is Andrea Levin Friedman and I graduated Gale School in 1965. I am
currently a school social worker in a middle school in suburban Chicago. I
have many memories of Gale School--not all of them "warm and fuzzy." I do
recall a teacher Sarah Singer who treated students harshly and was
verbally abusive (she would say "slow as molasses in January" if you didn't
come up with a correct answer in split second time). Perhaps, she might
have inspired me to go into school social work! I do have nice memories of
my neighborhood and spending summers at the beach. If there are any old
classmates around, please contact me at:
Comments - We're
looking for classmates of the Jan.,1949 graduating class and planning a
reunion soon. We've found about 1/2 the class now but still looking for the
following:
Paul Blum, Margaret Doran, Ruth Ehrman, Lois Friedman, Geraldine Funt, Jerry
Jacobs, Francis Kirsch, Donald Klein, Sue McGough, Avis Mishoulam, Anita
Olive, Margaret Perryman,Corrine (Portnoy) Gill.
I think I remember Mrs. Singer! Can't remember the number but she
had the end room in the SE corner of the building. I recall a real wacko.
There was one incident that stands out. We were to draw something, I think
a picture which was in one of our books. Not sure, but it might have been
Bob Greendale who did a really good picture. The picture was the
size of the book. She totally snapped out on him (or whomwever) for failing
the assignement and "TRACING" the picture.
Another awesome
fun memory triggered. That's why, in my old and decrepit years I love to
travel back back back to days of yore!!
Note to all....I just had a nice exchange with Bob Bartleson which
triggered an idea. The bulk of grads have either moved away from the
Chicago area (I'm Philly area now and I know Martha is NYC) or haven't been
alerted to this site. if someone had any contacts in the newspaper field
(It might also make a good local TV weekend fluff piece) I think the Gale
site, its history and the history of Gale School and the neighborhood would
make a great weekend story that would tie in to the re-gent of the area.
And AGAIN, on behalf of all, TNX to the WEBMASTER who has made all of this
fun possible
