Comments - Planning the reunion for the class of 1966 and 1967 was a great deal of fun.
It was lots of work time but I had a great time looking for everyone. Please
lets add to our lists by finding the lost people from those years or anyone we
forgot. Remember one did not have to graduate from Gale. If they were one of
our classmates at any time lets find them for the next reunion. Thanks to my
co-worker Gary Kash for all his hard work and his party room.
Please e-mail any names you find to me.

I'm sorry that I couldn't be there - it looked like lots of fun! Does anyone
remember Mrs. Sarah Singer? I think I had her in 5th grade and she was a
really interesting, if tough?, teacher. I'll never forget when she once called
on me in Music and she said, "Kathy, what letter comes after G in the musical
alphabet?" and I replied "H?" Some lessons (and teachers) we never forget! And I
also remember Mr Zemtsteff; what a cutie!

Great Website!! I am an Alumni of Gale Community Academy 1984.I might have some
echoes and Pictures, have to check my parents home. .nice to see the some
classes are having reunions.. Thanks reminding me of a wonderful time in my
life. .Please keep it up..
Comments - Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I am VERY sorry I missed the reunion
and promise to be there for the next one! Kudos to the hard workers that helped
put it all together. Kathy, I remember Mrs. Singer...who can forget her
with her ruler, walking up & down the aisles ready to strike anyone who's not
paying attention! Thanks to her Music class I found out I was nearsighted!
Miss Constance Jelke, 5th grade was my favorite!
Comments - Was in a rush the first time I signed on and didn't sign guest book. Please
overlook. Since I wouldn't know the first thing about creating a website, I can
only surmise the amount of work it took to come up with this presentation. Well
Done! The road signs are very clear and it's easy to find your way around. I
think it's a wonderful gathering of memorabilia. What reunion? I was happy to
submit some of the photos and Echos. Now I know why I as hanging onto them for
all these years! One more nice feature would be an area for my classmates to
tell what they've been up to for (in my case) 60 years. Would love to hear from
any and all. Gwen Wingrove Robb Stickney Gelesko (at Gale) (hi) (25 yrs) (27
yrs) ..........
Comments - Wow, what memories, was nice to see some familar faces at the reunion, was
surprised that i was able to recognize some, it was fun, thanks Gary & Jamie for
a wonderful blast from the past.
Comments - This is a very nice site and I will pass on whatever mementos I might have.
We moved to Evanston once I graduated in eighth grade and I left Chicago
entirely in 1979 so I had lost track of just about everyone. Miles and Jack -
keep up the good work
Webmaster Note - Thanks for your nice
comments; please drop a name if you have a chance.
Comments - Hi Jamie, The pictures are really sharp. I don't recognize anyone though. I
guess people are looking different than how I remember them. If it's possible to
put names to the pictures, that would be very helpful. Great Work!!
Comments - This is a great site that brought back long-lost memories. Kudos to the
webmasters and keep up the good work! Susan Sternberg (attended Gale from
1958-1964 when we moved to Waukegan)
Comments - Good work, webmasters. I'm from the class of '66 and had a great time at the
reunion last November (2001) attended by the classes of '66 & '67. If anyone out
there was at Gale in 1953, you may be interested in this. I was looking at the
1953 Gale Echo on this site, and a name jumped out at me. There was mention of a
teacher named Miss Pietch. I know a Miss Pietch who comes into the
Chicago library where I work. Sure enough, it is the same lady. She was happy to
get a print-out of the page, and she had nice memories of Gale School. She went
on to become a principal. Of course, now she is elderly and retired, but still
going strong.
Chris Juhn Guswiler, Class of '66
Comments - I would be interested in emailing those students who attended Mrs. Ross's 3rd
grade class in 1958-1959 and Mrs. McCaffrey's 4th grade class in
1959-1960. Thanks.
Comments - Hello. I talked to Miss Pietch again and she asked me to convey the
message that she remembers Gale fondly. She enjoyed the students there and sends
best regards to all. She gave me a class photo from 1953 which I will scan and
submit to the webmasters soon.
Chris Juhn Guswiler, Class of '66.
Comments - Now I see why we saved all this stuff...so it could be presented on this
site. Had a great time browsing all the links and found it all very well
organized. Thanks for all your time and effort, Miles and others. I'll be back.
Gwen Wingrove Gelesko, Class of 1941
Comments - Hi! Would be pleased to "talk" with ex-Gale emailers. I "grad'd" June 1952
and went on to Sullivan.
Comments - I left the 1952 graduation photo and would love to get the names my brain
can't seem to recall. Please send me any info you can. Thanks......
Comments -
Great Job on the creation
of this web site. I'm sorry that I missed the reunion. I guarantee I'll be at
the next one. I see a few familiar names but few that were at the reunion.
Comments - It's been a long time but this site sure brought back memories!!!!!! Hi to
every one I used to know. I now live in a small ranching community N. E. of San
Diego Ca.
Comments - I was interested in seeing the picture of Mr. Witcraft in the 1948 Echo. He
was pricicpal when I was in K-3rd grade and the most feared man (person - in
those days we had no men teachers) in existence. "Mr. Witcraft's office" was
undoubtedly a chamber of horrors. Mr Boylan took over as principal in
1948 or 1949. I graduated 1953, went to Lane Tech, then to Cal Tech in Pasadena,
California. I married my high school sweetheart, Louise Meredith, and her
Grandmother lived with us in Pasadena. One Sunday morning in 1961 , I answered
the door, and came face-to-face with MR. WITCRAFT! And I thought I had gotten
away with eating candy in class in 1948! Turns out the Witcrafts were (charming)
friends of Louise's Grandmother, and really weren't after me. But I still
occasionally wake up in a cold sweat over that one.
Comments - Thanks again for this site! The video reminded me that I was a Patrol Boy,
too. I also remember going for lunch to a shop across the street from the
school, but can't recall its name. Anyone remember?
Comments - Rich Goldman is referring to Hy's Market, located in the corner
basement of the building at NW corner of Ashland and Jonquil Terrace. Rich was
probably one of us who stood in line to get a small ration of...BUBBLE GUM! That
was precious commidity in the days of WWII. Hy's had shelves of penny candies,
and taught many a kid basic economics - allocation of resources. To the
webmaster: Thanks for doing such a good job.
Ward Calaway, '53
Comments - Great Job on the Website. I went to gale up to the 7th grade and then
transferred elsewhere otherwise I would have graduated in 1990. I have great
memories of all the teachers and staff there. I want to contribute photos and
other memorabilia seems you are somewhat short on the 80's as soon as I get
settled with my classes.
Comments - Thanks so much to the webmasters Miles and Jack. What a great job! I spent
over an hour perusing the entire web site. I attended Gale School from 1940 to
Jan. 1949 when I graduated. A few of us, Jerry Bold, Chuck Smoot and I (Bruce
Bartleson) have been trying to locate members of our class but have not had
much luck. I hope some of our classmates might see this and get in touch.
Comments - Does anyone rememebr a teacher at gale named Mrs Mae Bach?
webmaster note -
Thanks for your entry. If you desire, you can leave a
name and e mail in a subsequent post and it will help others answer your
question and contact you.
Comments - Nice sight! A group of us held a reunion a few years back for the classes of
1957,58,59. Many people attended from all over the country. We went to Morse
Beach, the school, took a bus tour of Rogers Park, and had a pizza party. All
had a good time. We have an entire photo record of the event, many gale echoes
and class pictures. When I have time I will forward some of these.
webmaster note -
Thanks for your entry. If you desire, you can leave a
name and e mail in a subsequent post and it will help others contact you.
Comments - I went to Gale from 1st through 4th grade, then we moved away in June of
1965. I'm going to be sending the webmaster my class photo from grade 3, room
206, dated Jan 1964. I remember a few names. I may be butchering the spelling.
Sound familiar? Andrew Lucas, Brian Kessler, Steve Grossman, Holly Hayes,
Debby Fox, Robert Rosenthal, Larry Rubenstein, Robert McGill, Scott Bond, Mark
Muramoto, Karen Langland, Ronald Boris, Susan Anderson, Terry Fier, Steve
Goldstein, Janet Rosenberg, Andrea Katz, Peggy Wolf, Deniece Menashe? I
would love to here from any of you! Thanks! - Al Rozanski (lower left corner -
first row of photo)
Comments - Great job on this website! We have been having a fun time looking at the Gale
Echo Archives and the pictures of the old neighborhood. You have brought back
great memories. We also have fond memories of the Halloween parties at Kiwanis
Park and of the Howard St. window decorating contests.
Comments - Thanks Alan for your email! Anyone interesting in helping pull together a
reunion of the graduating class or 1969 (or anyone who might have moved away
that would have graduated that year? I have very fond memories of Gale, Jarvis
and Howard beaches and the whole area. Anyone remember the Hi-Neighbor Day
parades?
Comments - Okay boys .... Anyone remember playing "ledge" on the Gale school grounds?
The object of the game was to bounce a "pinkie" or stripped down tennis ball
against the decorative lip - or ledge - of the school building as hard as you
could. You either got a hit or an out depending on whether the players in the
field bobbled or caught the ball. If if flew over the last players' heads, it
was a homer.
Comments - Does anyone remember a painting in the library? It was either Joan of Arc or
a knight, with a horse. I've been searching for a copy of it for years but am
having trouble describing it exactly. Any help would be appreciated.
Comments - My brother and I went to Gail thru the 60s. Was telling a friend about
playing Ledge the other day! Thought I'd check the web. I was floored by the
site. Seeing pic's of Ms. Jones. Mr.s Graff and Zemsteff. Things and people I
had not thought of in 30+ yr.s started flooding back. Most of the issues of the
Echos we were in are missing. We lost our copies of the Echo in a flood in '72.
Anyone have other copies from that era?
Comments - It was real fun to visit the web site and see some of the old pictures. At
the last Sullivan reunion of class of '69 in 1999, I think we had a picture of
the group of Galeites attending taken. Thank you for a fun time. I will pass
this page along to my little sister, Dorothy.
Comments - I never thought my poem from the Gale Echo would be published on the
internet! I went to Gale from 61-67 and then moved to west Rogers Park. I live
in San Diego Ca and would love to hear from any old schoolmates.
Comments - Nice site, thanks web masters for the hard work of bringing our old memories
alive.

Comments - Hey Richie Goldman!! Would you remember Judy Grant, Ilene Scott,
Bunny Bellande, Phyllis Ostfeld? to mention a few. I have CRS the same as
you. How about Pat Tungate? I just went past the school the other day.
Thanks webmasters and alumni for your wonderful site!! I would send you pictures
but seems classmates cut themselves out a bit. Will get to Phyllis. She saved
everything.
Comments - Would anyone remember a family with the last name of Cass?
Specifically, Carolyn "Duchess" Cass - though there were a few other kids
in the family. I believe Alan, and Paula were the siblings. They
moved to Manhasset, Long Island when Carolyn was in sixth grade. She would have
been in the graduating class of 1966 had they remained in Chicago. I lost
contact with them a few years later. The website is great - it brings back so
many memories.
webmaster note -
The Cass family has been located. (see entry below)
Date:March 21, 2004
Comments - Amy - Are you Jennifer Malis' sister? She was in my grade - '69. I
left Gale much earlier than that but still keep in contact with some of the
"kids" she might have known too. We are having a mini-reunion in April, and she
might be interested. Please let her know and pass on my email address. I'll send
her the details. Thanks.
Comments - Wow !! pretty scary pictures !! I look hispanic which is ironic, being I live
in Tucson, Az. only now I am blonde & fortunately grew out of my ugly duckling
stage !! Is there anyone from my class that has organized any type of reunion or
contact? I am Kathy Hayes (Callahan now ) I graduated in '70, my sister
Holly Hayes was 2 years ahead, & then my brother Jimmy Hayes has already had his
reunion a few summers ago !!my e-mail address is kathyahayes@theriver.com & I am
in contact w/ Franny Rutstein who still lives in Skokie. Thanks, Good Job
on the site !!
Comments - What a great site...and what fond memories it brings back! I'm thinking I had
Mr. Graf when he looked like his before picture! How exciting to see comments
from people you grew up with! Howie Lanoff...how's Donna? Peggy Wolf...the
Cass' say HELLO to all of your family!
Comments - What a trip! What a site! Thanks so much for it. I, too, remember Mr.
Witcraft only we called him Mr. Witchcraft. I was terrified to be called to
the office. Am in touch with fellow classmates Bruce Bartleson and
Jerry Bold. Anyone from the Jan. class of 49, get in touch with us. I now
live in Wisconsin.
Comments - Great Web site! Attended Gale School from 1962-1969.Left for Evanston
at the end of 7th grade. Whatever happened to Rutstein, Hayes, Reitman,
Wolf, Fine, Lieberman, Jaffe, Gannon, Ianatello, Stern, and others? Sorry I
missed the 69' reunion. What a great school that help produce so many wonderful
memories and friends.
Comments - Sorry forgot to add my name to the above comments.I would have graduated with
Kathy Hayes and the gang in 1970.I would love to get in touch with Frances
Rutstein and others!! Thanks
Comments: - I cannot believe how much information and how many people have looked at the
Gale web site. I never thought by putting the reunion(1966 and 1967) together in
Nov 2001 with Gary Kash all this would come about. I want to thank Jack and
Miles for keeping the web site going. It is lots of hard work and true
dedication. Thank all of you again for your support. Keep the web site alive.
Comments: - I have run into 2 Galeites in the last 2 days One at work and one at a party

Comments: - I am reposting, I went to gale school until we moved in 5th grade (67-72) I
was wondering if anyone knew Janice Venables? She tried getting in touch
with me through my brother Mark and he got the wrong number. I had a great time
growing up in Chicago. Lol besides all the beatings. Thanks
Comments: - Your site brings back memories both bitter and sweet, of clasmates and
friends and the neighborhood I grew up in. Thank you for your efforts. I have a
copy of the Gale Echo 1956 which I will scan and email to you as time allows.
Comments: - It's interesting seeing the neighborhood that I grew up. It's been many
years. I hope you have some features on the class of '67. Sorry I couldn't make
the re-union Jamie. Give my regards to everyone especially Bob Kramer.
Comments: - It's something to see all these names and faces coming back to me. Glad to
see there are some people who think enough of Gale's "Glory Days" to begin a
website.
Comments: - A really fine Website. Even thought I didn't attend Gale, I found it very
interesting and well conceived.

Comments: - Here's a question, I've been told that the "Old" neighborhood has gotten very
dangerous. My cousin has told me that I would be risking my life to walk around
the old Howard St. "L" and other places. Is this true? If so, It's a shame. I
remember the Near North as being a very safe area, the kind of place where you
could let your kids walk free and not be worried if they would be attacked.
Comments: - Hi, I graduated from Gale in 1967. I guess I missed at least one reunion. I'm
living and teaching in NY state. If anyone remembers, I had an older brother
named Danny, two sisters, Martha & Sarah, and a brother Chris. We lived on
Sheridan Rd. I was a friend of the Scammon twins, Sue Englen,
Craig Schifferdecker, etc. Anyone know how to reach any of them?
Comments: - Hello everyone. Just found out about this website and I am thrilled about it.
It brings back so many good memories. I am Celia Zemchuck-Geiger, Class
of '67. My husband Dan also attended Gale School but only for 2 years, 1958 and
1959 and he says Hi to Miles Beitler. Miles do you remember meeting Dan at
UICC?. To the person that asked about Mrs Sarah Singer, I remember her
being a very good teacher. I remember that when she taught Music class it was
most important that one did not sit in a front seat because she would
(accidentally)spit! I was usually out of spit range since my name started with a
Z and I was also tall so I sat in the back of the class. Thank you for finding
me Jamie Schremser, you made our Sunday morning.
Comments - What a wonderful idea! Thank you for taking the time to put this together. I
spent over an hour here, lost in memories of days gone by. I attended Gale from
1969-1972. If I had stayed, I would have graduated in 1978. I have fond memories
of my days at Gale. I would love to hear from a dear friend of mine whom I lost
contact with after I moved. Her nickname was "Herby", real name
Heripsima (sp?). I have no idea how to spell her last name. If anyone knows
who I am referring to, I would love to get in touch with her. Thank you again.
I'll be checking back periodically to see what's new around here.
Comments - What a great website! My thanks to Jack and Miles. The picture of Mr Graf
and Mr Zemsteff is great. Reading all of the comments reminded me of
the great teachers we had, yes including Mrs Singer, Miss Jelke,
and someone asked about Mrs Bach, I had her in...I think 6th grade or was
that Mrs Hewitt?). Lots of great memories. If anyone wants to plan a
reunion for the class of 1970, feel free to contact me.
Comments - I THINK YOU GUYS HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB AT PUTTING THIS WEB TOGETHER.

Comments - This was a wonderful website and I totally enjoyed looking at all the
pictures. It brought back a lot of memories, altho nowdays, it's sometimes hard
to remember things from so long ago. I attended Gale from 1960 to 1964, when I
graduated. My best friend was Harold Harrison and 4 of my brothers and
sisters also attended Gale, although I was the oldest. I DO remember playing
many games of 'ledge' in the Gale schoolyard. I think that game must have been
unique to Gale or at least to some Chicago public schools since no one, over the
years, has been able to understand it. when I've tried to explain it. Thanks for
a Great site.
Comments - Hi this is Angela Perkins (now Williams) class of 1987. Its very nice to see
this website I only wish that there were some items from my years here. We did a
lot during my time at Gale. I participated in the mural that is (maybe was)
displayed on the first floor outside the main office area. I am married (for the
2nd & last time), I have 2 wonderful children- Ciera age 11 and Devonte age 9
(both from first marriage). I know I don't have any pictures to add but I hope
someone does and will add to this website. And has anyone heard from Lionel
Collins ??

Comments - In an exchange with Jim Crue regarding Hy's, I commented that Mrs. Goodrich
was about the most influential teacher I have ever had. It occurs to me to ask
if anyone shares that view. She recognized and encouraged my interest in
science, eventually leading to a career in electrical engineering. Thanks, Mrs.
Goodrich.

Comments - Hi, I'm Valerie Wimmer, class of 1971 (Mr. Graf, gosh he looks
great!). I am just amazed that this site has been here and I never knew it. I
left Chicago in 1975 and have not been back since 1978. Thanks for the beautiful
pictures. In the newer ones I am positively lost! I grew up at Howard and
Bosworth. It feels weird just writing those names! I have lived here in
Louisiana since 1981. It's like a planet away. Thanks for the wonderful
memories!
Comments - I can't tell you how many memories this site brings back. I loved
growing up in Rogers Park. I loved it at Gale. To this day many of my old
classmates of 1971 have kept in touch. We are currently in the beginning
stages of planning our Class of 1971 Reunion for next summer and have
already hooked up with several Galites of '71. If you know anyone in that
year or are a graduate of 1971, please email me your info. We'll out you on
the mailing list. Valerie Willmer didn't leave her email on her
comments. We're looking for her now in Louisiana (pretty big state).
Thanks to Jack and Miles for the great job they are doing on this
site...it was a nice surprise to find.

Comments - I'm a 1967 graduate of Gale School and am delighted to visit this website. My
family came to the United States in 1964 and I was enrolled at Gale School just
a few days after we arrived. While at Gale School I learned English and was
extremely fortunate to be surrounded by a student body that welcomed me and by
teachers that didn't merely promote me from class to class but helped me
catch-up to the rest of my classmates. I remember being in Mrs Singer's 7th
grade class. What a great teacher. Except for spitting when she spoke--the trick
was not to sit in the front of the class. How long did she teach at Gale?

Comments - I've recently been contacted by some Gale alumni who directed me to this
site. We're getting together in June and it would be great for 1971 graduates to
contact us. Hope to hear from some of you.
Comments - I googled in Gale School one evening just out of curiosity and I'm so pleased
to see this terrific site. I am Diane (Shaw) Stearns, class of June 1951. I've
been living in Boise, Idaho since 1970. I'm still in touch with Pat Fitzhugh and
Alfred Niederman, who are now living in Parker, Colorado, as well as Irene
Chalmers, living in Iowa City, Iowa. I did hear that Philip Zielinski died--he
was a wonderful artist. I've always wondered about all the other class members.
Do contact me. Thanks.
Comments - Interesting, well-designed site! I suggest duplicating the 1964 graduating
class picture found in the "Gale Echo" archives into the "Class Photos" section.
Overall, a great trip down memory lane! I was only there a few years, had Mrs.
Singer for 6th grade, Mrs. Louik for 7th grade, and Mr. Graf for 8th grade. Keep
up the good work!

Hi, I was a student at Gale from 1969 to 1972 but before graduation, I had
to go back to Japan and could not attend the graduation. I recently
provided my class pictures of 1971 (grade 6 RM 308 Miss Hewitt) and 1972
(grade 7 Room 301) to the class photos. I remember our teacher Miss Hewitt
and by her side she always had a peanuts candy that she ate during class,
and sometimes she gave a piece to us if our answers were right.
If I was
still living in USA, I would love to attend the reunion but it`s a little
far from Japan. I would love to hear from anyone who attended the same
class.

Photos and Gale Echo Archive pages to see two new class pics and two new

Comments - The "new" photo of the 1951 class shows me friends I had almost forgotten.
What a great way to remember!
Comments - What a terrific time the class of '71 had at our 35 year reunion in June
graciously hosted by Frannie Rutstein and then the following day by
Scott Glieberman. Many thanks to Frannie, Dorothy Dean, Eddie
Hawkins, Judy Wolf, Peggy Morrow, Scott, etc., etc. for their hard work
in pulling it all together. Can't wait to see everyone again. By the way,
I live in So. California and would love to hear from anyone who lives out
this way or plans on vacationing in the near future. I'm 45 minutes from
Disneyland and 20 minutes from downtown L.A. and live in Santa Monica.
Comments - Oh my gosh!!! I'm so
excited that I found this site!!! I wish I would've searched for it sooner
as I'm moving back to New Jersey next week. My name is Tami Zorge
and I loved growing up in Rogers Park. I lived on Jarvis by the lake and
went to Gale School from 1966 to 1972. My family moved to the burbs early
in 6th grade and I was devastated. I hated the burbs but loved growing up
in Chicago. Anyway, I moved back to the area the 1st of the year (06)
because my daughter lives here (coincidently - and she loves it too) and
wants to remain at least until she finishes college. But, I've lived in New
Jersey for so long that I really miss it, so I'm going back, but rather
wistfully. I have many names that I remember like Alison
Johnston, Avra Colovos, Pam Zandlo, Debbie Meyers, Lori Fuller, Elaine
Vlahakis and many more. I also remember my fav teacher - Mr. Borie
from the 5th grade. If you remember me, please drop me a line. It would be
awesome to meet up with anyone and everyone!!! I can always come back and
visit my 1st home.
Comments - I also remember my
fav play leader. Her name was Ronjinah (sp?). I must've been in 1st
or 2nd grade, so that must've been 1967 or 1968. She gave me a little
present before she moved or graduated and I remember being so happy that she
gave me the present but so sad that I would never see her again. I also
remember on cold winter days, the play leaders would take the young kids and
have us all huddle in a corner outside in the play yard so that we could
stay warm.
Comments - my name is janice
venables and i would like to say ( ha ha ) i did not beat up karla
tesch. :-) i had a lot of fun at gale and would
love to hear from anyone i know. my brother steve is still in
chicago and i get up there to visit once in a while. i live in southern
indiana and am a turbine operator at a power plant, i have a house
and 5 acres, chickens, dogs and cats. kathi foley and i kept in
contact till a few years ago but not anymore.
Comments - i went to gale

jody sisson, debbie myers, becky hall, robin, andy and tony dadik and
susan that lived on jonquil and marshfield and a lot more that i
cant remember their names right now.
teachers.... my favorites mr. graf, mr. borre, mr. weiss, mrs. jelke
and a very tall thin lady who was my 4th grade teacher ( cant remember
her name ) .
i lived on sheridan and howard and later moved to juneway and sheridan.
after my mom died i worked for the simmons at their store "the
sandpiper" on howard street for a few years. the neighborhood has
definately changed, they have tore down a few apt buildings for gale
school expansions, looks weird. i remember going to the theatre on
howard street when they still showed movies and going to under the 'EL'
to watch the guy who made donuts fry them thru the viewing window. i
remember going ice scating when they watered down the baseball field at
kiwanas park and going over the wall into the cemetary behind juneway.
we got scared one time and all took off running and almost fell into a
just dug grave that didnt have plywood over it.
my brother steve venables and sister janet venables went
to gale too. steve is still in chicago and janet lives in atlanta,
georgia, im in southern indiana. steve has had diabetes since he was 12
and now has lost his sight, had a leg amputated, kidney and pancreas
transplant etc.
Comments - I'm in tears
right now. I'm so glad I've found this website. I went to Gale School
from 1974-1979, Kinder through 5th grade.
I moved to Texas and have not been able to return to visit since moving
away. This is the first time I've seen pictures of the school, the
neighborhood since leaving that summer of '79.
Thank you so much. JoAnn

Comments - Wow...I stumbled on this sight by accident. I attended Gale from 1963
to 1967 K-start of 4th grade before moving to Kilmer School. I would
have been in the class of 1972 which I saw just had its reunion. Could
you caption some of the photos with names? Mrs. Casino was my Kindergarden teacher, I still remember 11.22.63 arriving for afternoon
class to find out that JFK had been assassinated. Mrs. Meyer was
my first grade teacher, Mrs. Panos 2nd grade, Miss Blieweiss
3rd grade and I think Mrs. Freidman for the start of 4th
grade. I remember Miss Jones. I still have a few class
pictures, especially my Kindergarden picture and some old report cards
if you want to post them.

fair. I now live in Madison WI and frequently visit Chicago to see
family and friends. My name was Felicia Wright when I

3 grandchildren. I am attending College for a degree in business,
and would like to thank the teachers at Gale for laying the
foundation for me and giving me the chance to learn at a wonderful

Comments - Hi forgot to leave
my e-mail address a2742524@yahoo.com I also remember a teacher by the
name of gloria raynard she was my first grade teacher. I would
like to hear from cynthia Kelly and nora terry, aladino
dejesus, and Karen meyers to name just a few and wow to Mr. Graf he
does look great. I know you remember me I was one of your trouble makers
but you always told me that I was one of your brightest students it did
a lot for my self-esteem thanks. does anyone know what the teachers name
was who directed the choir at gale. I was also in the gym show for 4
years running and sang the lead part in the winter concert for 1978's
sound of music theme. If anyone knows how to get in touch with
arethia beaird or Monique Mason please let me know. Great
website.
Comments - To the class of

Patricia Isom. I am her sister in law and also an alumni of

Comments - Hi
again, This is in response to Janice Venables
(whom I remember) who referred to a tall slender teacher from 4th
grade. The teacher's name was Miss Mostek. I definitely
remember her - I think I had her twice - 2nd and 4th grades. Anyway,
I'm in Morristown, NJ now. So much is happening. I've decided to
return to school and pursue my MSN. I've always been interested in
mental heatlh, therefore, I think I'll specialize in psychiatric/mental
health nursing. Anyway, Happy Halloween to all. Hmmm, that reminds me
of lots of trick or treating in Rogers Park and asking for donations
for UNICEF. Those were special days but I just didn't know it back
then.
Comments - Hi
again, just wanting to respond to the comment about Ms.Mostek, I
also had her I think it was in the 4th grade spelling class that I had.
Does anyone remember a teacher by the name of Mr. Smith? I had
him in 5th grade he was really mean lol. I think I remember the teacher
that taught the choir but I'm not sure if I'm spelling her name right,
Mrs. Lavant? and what ever happened to that teacher named
Mrs.Bates? How about some pictures of the class of 1979 and where is
our Gale Echo for that year. Where is Mr. Weiss is he still
alive?
Comments - Hi all,
thanks for the memories! My brother Chuck Bernstein sent me the
link to this site, amazing stuff! I was in the January class of
1961. Myself and my younger siblings (brother Chuck, sister
Avey Bernstein Habel) are all Gale-ites and Sullivan graduates. At
that time I was Judy Bernstein.
I've lived in Seattle, Washington since 1969. In November of 1994 I
legally changed my name to Sara Amber. I have all my class
pictures somewhere in a box in my basement and when I find them I'll be
glad to send them for scanning.
I remember boys playing ledge. To Andy
Regalmuto - where's Chipper? Please let me know, thanks!
Comments - Im 40 years old now and I still
remember every teacher I had at Gale
Mrs. Casino
Mrs. raynard
Mrs. wilson
Mrs.Davis
Mrs. leavant
Mrs.Foley
Ms. Mostek
Ms. Jelke
Mr. Borre (not sure if thats spelled correctly)
Can you remember all of yours? Was the
librarians name Mrs. Eldridge?

Comments - to jeff I remember you, and yes the
librarians name was Mrs. Eldredge. Mrs Levant is the teacher
that directed the choir. you graduated the year after I did do you remember
Kathy King and her brother Chauncy? I can remember every
teacher that I had also.
Mrs. Raynard
Ms Jelke
Ms Mostek

years were.

Comments - Just a question .....
Can anyone confirm that this painting hung in the Gale library?
(note - click on the picture for a
Comments - I found this site by accident--it's
fantastic! I have such terrific memories of Gale School (before moving to
the unfriendly suburbs after 4th grade in 1956.) How was I to trade in my
leather motorcycle jacket with the silk scarf in the epaulet for circle
pins, pleated skirts and and Villager clothes? I can easily remember more
than 20 classmates from those times and have several class photos which I
will try to submit. Lois Siegal was my 1A and 2A teacher and the
best teacher I ever had. I try to convince people that drawing hopscotch
patterns in the gravel with our heels was more fun and better "outdoor
education" than all of the green fields that were to come. Hy's candy store
was our favorite destination. When friends began to move to the suburbs we
would go to Howard Juvenile to buy them going-away presents. Thanks for a
great site.
Comments - yes, mrs. mostek, thank you. i
loved her.
if mr smith was a younger guy who was not too bad looking.?
yes, he was mean he pulled me up off my seat by my hair. 30+ years later
the memory of it doesn't quite hurt like it did back then, ha ha :-)
while visiting in chicago, i showed my brother steve venables this web site
and altho he is legally blind he got out his magnifing glass and we went and
looked at a lot of his former classmates while i read him the names. we
talked a lot about mr. graff and mr. zemstaff and mr. weiss.
Comments - The painting is titled "Sir Galahad" ...
by George Frederic Watts circa 1885.

Comments - I remember Mrs. Levant. She was my
3rd grade teacher. The other teachers that I remember are:
Mrs. Kane Mrs. Casino (didn't have her but I remember her. She looked mean I think) Miss Mostek Mrs. Danoff Mr. Borre Mr. Weiss Mr. Borre (I loved him!!!)
Comments - Hi , I would love to be contacted

Comments - What a great site, Thank You So Much for
putting this up!!! I attended Gale school from 1975 until 1980 when we
moved to Cali. Kindergarten (Mrs. Casino, was very nice!) Mrs. Raynard was
my first grade teacher. I remember Mrs. Heck (2nd grade) she was a bit
tough...I adored my 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Levant....and I remember Mr.
Weiss and those darn poles we had to climb! Remember sitting on the
sidelines if you didn't wear your sneakers/tennis shoes on Gym day???
I don't remember my 1980 6th grade teacher's name, she was in the *cool*
room, third level, to the Left of Mr. Blanco's room....
The room w/ the Lab equipment and lockers? She had dark hair, and looked
very stern, but had a heart of Gold...sometimes wore a Lab coat..would love
to remember her name...
Thanks again for a great site!

Thanks for this web site.
Comments - My
name is Pamela (Cook) Smith. Graduated in 1958 in June. I was the girl with
the perfect laugh. That was a joke. Would like to hear from anyone.
Also is there going to be a 50th reunion, if so I would like to be a part of
it. Please e-mail me. Thanks everyone.

attended Gale from first through sixth grade. I transferred to St. Jerome

incorrect. )
Comments - I think that they should have a reunion on the class

left that school when I was just a 3rd grader but i still remember I use to

Comments - my name is J.R. and I attended gale school from the
mid 80’s up until the early 90’s and I always reminisce not only about the
school but the neighborhood. 1722 w. Juneway, 7700 Marshfield used to be my
addresses and even though throughout those years the area was on a decline
and was considered the “hood” I didn’t see it that way to me it was just
home. The Juneway jungle was a place where i fell in love with the beautiful
faces of all my fellow brothaz and sistas of color both black and latino it
was a neighborhood that instilled cultural pride in me from a very young
age. It’s a shame how a lot of landmarks in “the jungle” are no more

Comments - I love this site, it does bring back all those great
memories of ice skating at the park, Lighted School house, and Hy's penny
candy. Remember those long lines? How about the 5 cent french fries in the
wax paper? Wax buck teeth and big red lips? I went to Gale from 61-68,
Kinder through 5th. My mom lost all of our class pictures from Gale, I
would love to have them, if anyone will send a copy. I remember Karla,
(both parents were deaf), she was a good friend of mine from Kinder, and
Betsy Nachman, Eve and Leslie Prikopa, (twins), a pretty girl
named Amber, a capable handsome boy named Howard, and Alan Medley. I
had Mrs. Zale, Mrs. Hewitt, and Mrs. Anise, a few teacher names I
recall. I am Barbara Roberts, now Burgess, and lived on Jonquil Terrace,
right across from the school. Went back to the neighborhood last
Christmas. I was transfixed, but my husband was wondering if he could
"take" the groups of tough looking guys hanging out. I wish it was still
like it was. I remember the boys playing "ledge" and the pinkies. The
girls jumped rope like pros and roller skated. I would love to hear from
anyone from that era!
Comments -I attended Kindergarten at Gale, and I lived across the
street on Jonquil Terrace. Mt two older sisters also attended Gale. I have
been doing research on Rogers Park for some time now, and I have vivid
memories of my neighborhood. Something is calling me back there, nagging at
me in my dreams, and I am determined to pursue my history. We moved to
Alaska in 1965, so I was only there for 6 years, I have truly enjoyed your
site, and found pics of one of my sisters and an uncle. I am desperate to
find a pic of the apartment building we lived in, although I do not have the
exact address, it was 16 something Jonquil Terrace, and I could see Gale out
my living room third floor apartment window, looking left. I am 48 years old
now and I would love to revisit my birthplace neighborhood. Could someone
direct me on finding a picture? I will check every week, thank you !
Webmaster note - if the
poster would leave an e mail address, perhaps someone would e mail
him a pic.

Comments - Great web site! I just went to your Gale
website and found it very fascinating! My Grandmother, Beatrice Stebbins,
graduated from Gale in either 1926 or 1927. I have tons of school pictures
and a class photo from the same era. Do you have access to student records
during that period? Can anyone confirm the years my grandmother went to
your school? I am also doing some genealogy research and having this info
would be helpful.
I am more then willing to mail some of my Gale "stuff" to you to be added to
your website. It looks like the school began in 1922 and I did not see
anything on your website from the 20's. Hopefully I can change
that! Please let me know what you would be interested in for
inclusion. Thanks.

A Gale School website?! Very cool! Yes, our stretch of Howard

I hadn't left the neighborhood, I would have graduated in January, 1958. I
remember Ileen Sherman, Jamie Rubenstein, Barbara Martin, and
Virginia. Ileen and Jamie "got married" in the schoolyard when
we were in first grade. One of our teachers read all the Wizard of Oz books
to the class. I don't remember if it was Miss Siegel or Mrs.

Comments - I keep coming back to visit this
fantastic website. My class would have been 1952, but my parents switched me
to St. Jerome for eighth grade, so that’s where I graduated. I lived
on Bosworth near Jonquil Terrace, and the alley behind my building was next
to what we called “Ashland
Playground.” It had a merry-go-round, jungle gym, sandbox, baseball field
and a brick shelter house. In winter, we skated on the flooded baseball
field. After St. Jerome, I attended St. George HS in
Evanston for a couple of years before my parents moved us to
Rensselaer Indiana. My favorite and most influential teacher at Gale was
Mrs. Goodrich. Some of the kids I hung out with at Gale were Arthur
Fletcher (kind of a wild kid), Ward Calaway, and Philip Zielinski,
who shared my interest in astronomy. I remember visiting Ward’s home, and
his dining room table was covered with wires, switches and other parts he
scrounged from the alley behind a TV repair store. Does anyone remember a
restaurant on Howard Street that my parents started in 1949 that served
Cornish pasties? I think it was called the “North Woods Pasty Shop.” It was
only there for a couple of years.

Comments - What a great site! I can't believe all the
responses from people over the years. Good to see Mr. Graf
again, he looks the same. It's amazing to see all the folks that
attended Gale before we did. How many stories there must be!I
recently moved back to
Chicago last year from the Bay Area and it's quite a change.
If anyone would like to contact me I would be happy to respond. I
still see to this day and wonder what happened to many
of our other classmates. I also see the younger siblings of kids I
knew that also graduated from Gale. This is as cool as it gets.
Remember ledge? Mixers? And those paintings Mr. Graf made us paint!
If there's going to be a '72 reunion, I would like to be notified.

went to Gale school from 6th thru 8th grade (1964 thru 1966) and am
proud to say I was the Mayor of Gale School in 1966!! I still have
fond memories of
roller skating in the hall ways during lighted school house
and going to the Capri Restaurant for pizza afterwards. I would
love to hear from fellow Gale alumnies from the 1966 graduating
class. I have been living in southern California now for the last

Peggy Wolf and I got in touch with each other and met for the
first time in years, it was just great............ we just picked up
where we left off 40 some years ago!
Comments - OMG--(Oh My God)--I just this morning
discovered this Web site. The timing IMHO is incredible. Why?
Because my wife, our eldest son, and myself just returned to
New York City last night from a 1 week(+) visit to
Chicago to "Go Home."
Thomas Wolfe's objection notwithstanding. I am close to tears
as I type these comments. Why, you may ask--Because--------
I graduated Gale in Jan. 1945 and Sullivan in Jan. 1949, and moved
to NY City in Sept 1949 and have lived there since. My mother
passed away in 1946 and my wife, Miriam, has been urging me for
years to come to
Chicago to see where I grew up and to perhaps bring closure
to what she has perceived as residual mourning for my mother; I
haven't been to her grave site since her funeral in 1946. Our oldest
of four married sons, Sam, wanted to come with us and take a video
with taped comments of our visit to preserve some heritage for his
children and his brothers.
So our itinerary as "musts" included my mother's grave and Gale and
Sullivan which we did. I still work full time although I will be 77
years old in a few weeks. I plan to add more comments to this web
site but have to go back to work now.
Oh Yes, what happened emotionally on our trip was that Miriam and I
seemed to rediscover ourselves and our relationship on the trip.
PS. I looked at Echo and it reminded me that I was class president
for the Jan. 1945 graduating class. No wonder I ran for public office in NY
- NY State Assembly and other offices. Oh, I worked for IBM for what seemed
like a hundred years( 36+) in various capacities: management, consultancy,
and representing IBM to the US Congress in the 1970s, including testifying
before a committee chartered by an act of Congress. All this from a kid who
lived on Birchwood, and swam on Howard, Jarvis, and Rogers beach and used to
meet the gang at six corners Greenview/Howard/Rogers. (And my brother who
graduated Gale in 1942 and Sullivan in 1946 could only get into
Harvard.) What an undistinguished bunch we must have been, all us Gale
graduates.

Comments - Hello I am so content for the person who put
up the Echo for the the Class of 1984. I was the editor that year
and Man did that bring me back memories of Great Times. I lived in
the Hood ( Marshfield and Juneway) or East Rogers Parks for the
Years of 1982 - to about 1985. I am very grateful for growing up in
a diverse part of town (the HOOD) where every culture got a long !!
I wish the whole world was could take a lesson from EAST
ROGERS PARK. Its so nice to see pictures of the old school
and neighborhoods! Thanks for everyone who makes this possible. Keep
up the great work...

Comments - WOW! I stumbled upon this site while showing
my daughter the picture of the school her mom went to when she was a
kid. We peeked through the Gale Echo Archive (1972) and printed on
its pages was a poem I wrote in the 2nd grade, a photo of my brother
who was in the play "Good Grief Charlie Brown" and an
acknowledgement to my parents whom have not lived under the same
roof since 1996. It was wonderful to show my college aged daughter
whom was raised on the west coast a bit of her heritage. Thank you
for all the wonderful photo's. I called my brother Tim immediately
to tell him he is still a star and I a published writer (hee hee hee)

Comments - I have some sad news to tell. My
brother Steven Venables age 51 died February 20, 2008 of
complications of diabetes. He had diabetes since he was 12 years old
and had gone through so much. He knew about this website
and last summer he looked at the web site with me and enjoyed trying
(he was legally blind) to look at the pictures with a magnifying
glass. We talked about people he went to school with and he asked me
to find Debbie Lawson's picture for him. He said Mr. Graf had
not changed at all. Well just thought I would share this for
anyone who knew him.

Comments - Gale School Class of 1970 is having
their 4th annual reunion in Chicago,
Comments - Hello from Charles K. (Biff) Miller,
student at Gale from 1957-1964, Kindergarten to 1st semester, 6th
grade. I moved to Bethesda, Maryland and now live in the
Philadelphia, PA area. However, I have been informed of this site by
another ex-student, Jack Davis, who would have graduated 8th
grade in 1966.
My email is Biff.pa52@GMail.com but I can't promise how
rapidly I will respond. Good Luck Rogers Park!

Comments - Hi again; looking for Gale alums Laura
Bailey/Begun; Beatrix Nyitrai (who moved to Switzerland
before graduating, I believe, possibly fifth grade?) and Kristine
Anderson.
Thanks for putting together this wonderful website; such great
memories!
Comments - Does anyone have the contact information for
any of the Potter boys: Don ('65), Ron ('66) or Jack ('69).
Miles & Jack, keep up the good work, and thanks for developing a
GREAT site!
Comments - Neither Gale or the neighborhood has
completely recovered from the horrendous decline that began in the
early 1980's. Everything hit rock bottom in the middle 1990's. The
neighborhood is being gentrified, but it's going to take a very long
time. A friend of mine taught there for a few years in the early
1990's and said that it was the worst experience of her life. I
hope things have improved there, but I'm not terribly optimistic.
Those of you that graduated from Gale in the "golden years" should
treasure your memories as well as cherish them, because, as they
say, "what was is no more".

Comments - Reading all of these posts make me realize
what a truly wonderful school Gale was at one time. Having taught
there for, most fortunately, a very short time in the early 1990's,
I am sorry to tell all of you that it became arguably the most
horrible place to teach in the entire city. It suffered a fifteen
year or so "reign"by a principal (who shall remain nameless) who
ruined it. Granted, the student population became very difficult,
but the administration was shameful. Fake programs that never
really existed were padded to the books, smoke and mirrors
everywhere, and an atmosphere not unlike the 1955 film "Blackboard
Jungle" prevailed there, especially in the sixth, seventh, and
eighth grades. The bathrooms, especially during the hot summer
months, when school was on a "year-around" schedule, smelled worse
than the elephant cages at the zoo. Discipline and behavior
problems were rampant on the third floor, while the principal sat in
her office all day. The third floor was the worst and the most
dangerous, and never once in my five years teaching there did I ever
see the principal on this third floor. Gale may still be bad, but I
doubt whether it could be as bad as I remember it to be fifteen
years ago. I'm surprised that the Board of Education kept it open.
Truthfully, it should have been closed, demolished, and obliterated
into extinction ten years ago.

Comments - Although I've spent most of my adult life down
state Illinois (Bloomington) and W. Lafayette, IN. I haven't been
to Rogers Park in some 10 years. I was speaking to an old college
friend who ironically currently lives on Juneway, and I vowed to
visit the next time I'm in Chicago. I stumbled upon this site a few
months back and was happy to send in my copy of the June 1977 Gale
Echo and class picture. Well, I'm coming to Chicago tomorrow June
12th, 2008 and I plan on visiting my old neighborhood. I've always
wondered what happened to my dear friend Lilly Sacks(I wonder
if she ever went on to become a doctor?) and Jackie Mitchell
(whom I had the biggest crush on). James Webb is another
person whom I remember dearly. Danny Piles, Ketty Echeverria,
Cindy Kimmons. Man oh man would I love to connect with some of
my classmates from 1977. If anyone knows where some of these people
are drop me an

Comments - Regarding the comments posted by 'unsigned' on
6/10/08, I'm happy to say that the Gale Academy appears to be
heading back to the "good old days". In September of 2004 several of
us from the class of 1969 toured the school and was delighted to
find a very clean and charming facility, filled with smiling
children and a couteous staff. Our hat's go off to the principal at
that time, Ms. Rudy Lubov, who apparently had a lot to do
with the schools revitalization - including bringing in former
students to share their success stories with the kids. The school,
and the neighborhood, may have gone through some rough times, but
things can change if the desire is there; and the folks in Rogers
Park certainly seem to be headed in that direction.
Comments - I
wish I had known about this web site so I could have attended the
reunion of the Class of 1942!

Comments - Hi,
I left Rogers Park in April of '68 as a ninth grader. I went to St
Jerome's, then Gale, then Sullivan. I posted earlier that I had a
brother Danny (now deceased), sisters Martha and Sarah,
and a brother Chris. I was a friend of the Scammons
and Susan Englen. Does anyone have contact info for them?
I too have been back to the neighborhood when in Chicago to see my
dad. It went through some rough times, but is now moving toward
"trendy".
I'm living and teaching in New York and would love to hear from
anyone.
I remember Mrs Singer quite well. Great teacher, but my
favorite was Mr Graf.
Comments - Regarding the recent posts of Gale in the
1980's and 1990's:
I started at Gale in 1978, and I graduated with the class of 1987,
so I experienced the "decline" firsthand as a student from K all the
way through 8. I also attended high school in the city, so I came
back periodically through 1991. And even after going out of town to
college and graduate school through 1996, I also visited Gale from
time to time. Yes, looking back on this now, with the luxury of
hindsight, one can realize that Gale was not such a great place as
compared to previous decades or other places. However, please keep
in mind that as a student one has a very different perspective than
that of a teacher. I have some great memories from my times at Gale.
Of course I remember all too well some of the bad things about these
years, and perhaps since I did not experience Gale during its "rock
bottom" years of the mid 1990's, I do not know the worst of it.
But I also remember many wonderful teachers who cared deeply about
the futures of their students. I remember a neighborhood struggling
with poverty, crime, and unemployment that looked to Gale as a place
where its children could find a few hours of joy each day. I am
offering this perspective simply as a response to the entirely
negative comments posted earlier this month. And while I did not
live through the "golden" years of Gale, I would not trade my
experiences there for anything different. My years at Gale gave me a
solid education, but they also prepared me to embrace and encourage
diversity, to be smart about who I can or cannot call my friend, and
to appreciate the things I do have. These lessons prepared me well
for high school, college, graduate school, my professional career,
my marriage, and beyond. I am happy they did not tear down this
school as previously suggested. Thank you!

Comments - I just found out about this site from Eddie
Hawkins. I graduated in 71' and have alot of great Memories. I'm
looking to re contact with old friends we had such a good time back
then. I live in Chicago now and when I left gale I move to Skokie
ILL. I remember our group Frannie Rutstein, Kathy Hayes,
Cathy Pugh, Cookie Schmidt, Moe hogan Glenda Harris who we
called Harry, Donna Wassinger, Renee Severe, and a few more.
I hope you all remember the times of the slumber parties and egg
fights and shaving cream at Halloween. I hope to hear from some of
you and catch up.
My name is Charles K. Miller and I attended Gale from Sept.
1957 to Feb, 1964, when my father was transferred to the Washington,
DC area. Recently contacted by my old friend Jack Davis who
was somewhat instrumental in initiating GaleSchool.com. Prior to
locating this site, I had actually tried leaving a blog on the Arne
Duncan Page of the Chi Public Schools website. I am well, very
fortunate and feel enriched by having started my life in Rogers
Park.

Comments - i
went to gale from kindergarten to 8th in 1975. my brother steve
before me, my sister janet and my neice kelly rivera after me. i
can and will give my name - janice venables - because i stand
by what i say here. yes this was a very hard neighborhood to grow up
in, i got my butt beat and jumped on many occasion, i grew up on
welfare as a kid and went hungry and was on the street at 16 when my
mother died. but i can balance that with the many teachers who
were fine people that didnt get paid enough to teach us. teachers
who a lot of people on here have fond memories of, especially mr.
graf, for his discipline, mr. borre, for his love of
music and the yellow submarine musical that i still remember to this
day, mrs. casino for her crayons and her loving warmth when i
wanted to run out the door the first day of kindergarten, mrs.
jelke, for her science class', the school was a place where we
could go to and get guidence and a taste of what could be.
unsigned's quote
- "Truthfully, it should have been closed, demolished, and
obliterated into extinction ten years ago."
well, where would you
suggest the children go to school at.? evanston.? skokie.? wilmette.?
it sounds like you had more of a problem with the principal and
the other teachers. you have to ask yourself what did YOU DO to make
this school a better place, i didnt read that part. i am glad
we all have this forum to write our opinions however varied they
might be. i have done quite well and i feel this neighborhood
and school was the basis for this.
What a great site this is! Thank you. Al Rozanski got in touch with
me and told me about this treasure trove of memories. I was in the class of
1969, but was only at Gale from second thru fourth grades. So much of my
experience is vivid, but of course, so much has faded. The book fairs, the
assemblies with the terrifying Alma V. Jones keeping everyone in
line, playing ledge, the Howard Theater, etc. One of my favorites was when
the Scholastic books would finally arrive. If only I could bottle the smell
of a new book coming from that time in those cardboard boxes!
Once again, thank you for the great site.
Cheers, Andrew Lucas

Comments - My name is
Randy Walkowiak. Although I only spent two years at Gale, it
was a very memorable time. I attended Gale in 69-70 for Grade K (Mary
Jane Cascino, Room 105). Miles is going to post my 69-70
report card. It appears Kathleen Humphrey Winans and I were
Grade K PM classmates! So a special hi to Kathleen! Miles is also
kind enough to post 2 missing pages I have from the 1970 Gale Echo.
One of these pages is especially interesting as it lists the names
of the Kindergarten graduates. As for Grade 1, I was in Room 104.
Who were the first grade teachers? Mrs. Raynard does sound
familiar, however. My memories are warm...but sketchy. Did the
first graders eat lunch in the Assembly Hall? I distinctly remember
doing so and playing with my yellow metal baseball game lunchbox. I
remember watching Disney movies after school in the Assembly Hall.
Specifically The Love Bug and The Absent-Minded Professor. And here
is an odd memory...it has something to do with roller skating! I
remember being cautioned to watch for skaters as we entered and
exited the Assembly Hall. Were the older kids allowed to roller
skate on Friday afternoons? My only scary memory was gym class.
Horizontal wooden climbing rungs attached to the wall. They seemed
to be as tall as the Hancock building...I was truly petrified of
heights. I faintly remember seeing my mother and other moms in the
playground area. A special spring picnic of some kind with hot
dogs? And I remember a birthday party at the bowling alley on
Howard. A group of us kids walked from Jarvis and Greenview? to
school and felt as safe as could be. My, how times have changed. I
remember buying 1969 season baseball cards at a drug store place on
that corner, Jarvis and Greenview just W of Sheridan. And summer
camp( at Loyola Park?) Row boats filled with kids racing each other
on the BIG Lake. And orange ice cream push ups. Enough rambling.
Thanks to the webmasters and to all of you for posting your
memories.

To Randy Walkowiak,
I don't think I knew you, but my name is Tami Zorge and I
lived on Jarvis by the lake. I attended Gale between 66-72 and then
moved to the burbs unfortunately. I used to walk to school with my
sister, Teri, and/or my friend Alison Johnston (who I've
recently reconnected with). We either took Greenview or Ashland to
school. The drug store you mentioned was called Jarview Drugs I
believe. It was the one that burned down in the fire that also took
the A&P. That was devastating. There was also a drug store on
Jarvis and Ashland but I mostly frequented the one on Jarvis and
Greenview. It was good to read your blurb.
And to the person who mentioned "Facebook". I'm on it. I think I
just go by my name, Tami, but if it's not possible to reach me by my
name, my email address is: tealeaf1715@msn.com.
I'm also on Myspace.
Happy Holidays to all!
Tami
